Cape Verde is the third biggest nesting point for the Caretta Caretta, loggerhead turtles. This night tour will take you to one of the protected nesting beaches of Sal island where you can experience the emotion of seeing a loggerhead turtle laying her eggs. You will be picked up at the reception of your hotel and taken to one of the nesting beaches on Sal island. The transfer lasts approximately 20 minutes and in this time an experienced guide will explain everything you need to know about the life and habits of the turtles as well the rules that you need to respect. Once arrived at the beach one of the guides will stay with you seated on the sand while the other guide will start searching for the turtle. When the guide finds a turtle, you will be informed by VHF radio and start walking on the beach to arrive to the turtle. It is recommended to bring a beach towel to be more comfortable while waiting on the beach. Dark coloured clothes and closed shoes are recommended. It is forbidden to take photos with flash and use white or bright lights on the protected beaches.
Please note that even if we have a very high success rate, being nature, we cannot guarantee to see a turtle. In case this happens, you will be given the chance to come another day FOR FREE!
With this excursion, we support the conservation of the sea turtles of Sal Island by donating part of the profits to the local non-profit Project Biodiversity. Their guards and volunteers have been protecting the turtles for the last four nesting seasons! If you would like to help even more, you can also adopt a baby turtle in our offices, and take home a nice official certificate of adoption (all money goes to the protection of sea turtles).
Our guide will pick you up in front of the reception of your hotel/accomodation at the scheduled time and will take you to the beach of Serra Negra.
The transfer will last for 20 minutes during which our guide will give you all the most curious information about the turtles, together with few rules that we needs to respect to avoid disturbing the Sea Turtles during this beautiful process
An ideal spot for sea turtles nesting, Serra Negra is one of the two natural reserves of Sal.

Yes, but only without flash, in order not to disturb the turtle. Our guides will shine a red light to make it more visible. Anyway, we personally recommend to enjoy the moment in person rather than through a display
No, turtles come to nest after dark, so the excursion usually begins at 20.00h.

Santa Maria, Ilha do Sal - Cape Verde
Serra Negra is the primary nesting beach for Sal’s threatened sea turtles. The native loggerhead sea turtles are extremely sensitive to light pollution which can disturb their nesting habits and cause them to lose their way back to the ocean. Serra Negra Beach provides an ideal and safe nesting area due to the shade provided by the adjacent mountain.
