Cape Verde is an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, consisting of ten islands. It is situated 1,000 kilometers southwest of the Canarian Islands and only 480 kilometers west of Senegal. It’s a tropical destination and can be reached through a 4-6 hour flight from Europe.
Collectively, the islands have a total area of 4,033 km². Santiago is the largest island, and the smallest is Santa Luzia (uninhabited). Most of the islands are mountainous with spectacular rock formations. All of the islands are of volcanic origin. Fogo even hosts an active volcano.
Currency
The official currency is the Cape Verdean Escudo (ECV). 1 Euro = 110.265 CVE (fixed rate)
Language
The official language is Portuguese, but people also use another language called Creole, which is a raw, simplified Portuguese. Apart from this, in the touristic areas they speak English, Italian, French, Spanish, and German.
Tourism
The National Institute of Statistics (INE) reported that in 2018 the tourist population was estimated at 771,335 people, which is an increase of 8.3% in relation to the year before (712,199 people). Tourists prefer the islands of Sal (No Limits Adventure HQ) and Boa Vista, where you can find the most beautiful beaches of the archipelago.
Climate
The temperatures varies between 22-27 degrees Celsius all year, except for mountainous areas where the temperature could drop to 10 degrees Celsius and the desertic areas, where in August and September the temperature can reach up to 40 degrees Celsius.
In Sal Island for example we have an average of 2-3 rainy days every year, between August and October.
Healthcare
Cape Verde is a very safe destination. You don't need any vaccines to come here, and there are no dangerous illnesses in the archipelago (ex. Malaria, Yellow Fever, Zika, etc.).
Travel insurance is always recommended in case of an emergency situation.
Covid-19
Cape Verde reacted really well to this new situation, taking the necessary precautions to fight against the transmission of the virus and to constantly update new safety measures following its development.
Sal Island and Boa Vista received the International Health and Safety Certificate, thanks to those dedicated to the people affected by COVID-19.
Conditions to enter in the country
To enter the Republic of Cape Verde, you need a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after the date of return to your home country. A visa is not required for stays up to one month. There is an airport security tax (TSA) of 31€ per person that needs to be paid upon arrival in the airport.
Visa is not required for European Passport holders and some African countries.
The time difference is GMT -1. In summer, GMT -2.
Located on the southwest coast of the island, Ponta Preta is Sal’s most beautiful beach.
