Shark Bay, see Sharks in their Natural Habitat — Discover Sal Island

Baby Lemon Shark

Shark Bay Sal Island, Cape Verde is one of the most unique places to visit on the island, especially because you can observe Lemon Sharks safely in their natural habitat just a few steps from the shore.

Up Close with Lemon Sharks

Let’s start with the stars of the show: the Lemon Sharks. These sharks might seem intimidating, but Shark Bay offers a safe and unforgettable opportunity to get up close, as you can easily spot them in the shallow waters. Imagine standing in knee-deep water and watching as these sleek, golden-hued creatures glide effortlessly by. It’s an encounter that feels almost otherworldly.

Lemon sharks are fascinating animals. These sharks grow up to three meters long, but despite their size and name, they show no interest in humans as a snack. Instead, they’re curious, often coming close to investigate but always maintaining their cool, calm demeanor. Watching them in their natural habitat gives you a new appreciation for these often-misunderstood animals.

What Shark Bay Really Feels Like

What surprises most people at Shark Bay is how wild the landscape still is. There are no shops, no beach clubs, no built-up areas — just open coastline, volcanic rock, and the sound of the Atlantic. The wind carries the smell of salt and the water is usually so clear you can see the sharks long before you step in.

The area is shallow for several meters, which makes it easy to walk out while still feeling close to shore. You’ll often spot small fish weaving between the rocks or following the sharks, something you don’t see on the main beaches of Santa Maria. It’s simple, untouched, and very different from the touristic side of the island.

Where Is Shark Bay Located?

Shark Bay is located on the east side of Sal Island, just next to the historic village of Pedra de Lume and its famous salt crater. It’s easy to reach by car, taxi, or through a guided tour. The bay sits in a shallow, protected area where Lemon Sharks come close to shore, making it one of the best spots in Cape Verde to observe them safely.

A Personal and Real Encounter

What makes Shark Bay memorable isn’t only the sharks themselves, but the way you experience them: standing in shallow water, watching them appear out of the clear as they circle gently around you. There’s nothing staged or artificial — everything happens in front of you exactly as it would if no one were there.

The guys who work in the area know the bay better than anyone. They grew up here and understand how the sharks behave, when they get closer, and how to approach them safely. They’ll often explain things about the species, the tides, and the environment while guiding you into the water. It’s simple, direct information that helps you understand what you’re looking at without turning it into a “touristic show.”

Instead of a big adrenaline moment, Shark Bay feels more like observing wildlife in its natural environment — close enough to be exciting, but calm enough that you can take it all in.

The Downside: A World We Must Protect

One thing you might notice at Shark Bay is the presence of trash washed ashore by ocean currents. This isn’t caused by the local community — it’s a global issue that reaches even remote places like Sal Island.

The people of Pedra de Lume, together with local associations like Project Biodiversity and us at No Limits Adventure, regularly organize beach-cleaning efforts to protect the area. While it can be disappointing to see, it also highlights how important it is for all of us to reduce plastic use and care for the ocean.

A visit to Shark Bay becomes not just a beautiful experience, but also a reminder of how fragile these ecosystems are, and how much they depend on us.

Tips for Visiting

If you’re planning a visit to Shark Bay on Sal Island, these practical tips will help you enjoy the experience safely and comfortably:

• Tides Matter More Than Time of Day
Shark visibility depends mainly on the tide, not whether it’s morning or afternoon.
The best moment is usually high tide that is starting to go down — sharks come closer and the water stays shallow enough to stand comfortably.
You can still see sharks throughout most of the day, but tide conditions make a difference in how close and how clearly you spot them.

• Footwear (Important)
The seabed is rocky. Water shoes are highly recommended.
You can rent them on-site for 3 euros, and if you rent from the local guys, they will enter the water and guide you for free. A small tip is appreciated.

• Clothing
Wear swimwear or clothing that can get wet. You’ll be stepping into knee-to-waist-deep water.

• Don’t Go Alone
It’s safer and easier to enter the water with a guide or someone who knows the area. They help you position correctly and understand shark behavior.

• Sun Protection
Shark Bay has zero shade. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and water.

• Respect the Animals
Do not touch or chase the sharks. Move slowly and calmly. They are harmless but should not be disturbed.

• Getting There
Shark Bay is located near Pedra de Lume. Access is straightforward by car, taxi, or guided tour.
The last stretch is gravel, but any standard vehicle can reach it.

• Photos & Videos
A waterproof case or pouch helps if you want to take photos while standing in the water.

• Guided Visit
For a smoother and safer experience, joining a guided tour is recommended — timing, tide conditions and shark behavior are explained, making the visit easier and more enjoyable.

With these essentials, you’ll be all set to enjoy your adventure at Shark Bay.
