Top Travel Tips for Your Upcoming Cape Verde Holiday

Top Travel Tips for Your Upcoming Cape Verde Holiday

Summer is here! Here in Cape Verde, we welcome all visitors! With our pristine beaches, unique culture, and year-round warm weather, Cape Verde is a popular destination for tourists looking for a tropical getaway. If you’re planning a trip to this stunning this summer archipelago, here are some travel tips to keep in mind.

Tip #1: Don’t forget Sunscreen

We know; it seems so self-explanatory. But you’d be surprised how easy it is to underestimate this crucial step. It could be all that stands between you having an amazing holiday to a disastrous one. Cape Verde has a warm and sunny climate year-round, so it’s important to bring plenty of sunscreen. Keep in mind it is best to choose a sunscreen with a high SPF rating and apply it regularly throughout the day, especially if you’re spending time outdoors. Given the number of beautiful beaches there are on Sal Island alone, we are confident you’ll have immense fun in the sun. Also, remember to protect your eyes with sunglasses and wear a hat to protect your head and face from the sun.

Tip #2: Pack light, loose clothing.

One of the best parts of scheduling a holiday is planning what to wear. Because Cape Verde has a warm and humid climate, it’s important to pack light, loose clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. In addition to keeping you comfortable, wearing breathable clothing can also help protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Many breathable fabrics offer a degree of UV protection, which can help prevent sunburn and reduce the risk of skin cancer. However, despite the hot tropical weather, you’ll also want to bring a lightweight jacket or sweater as it may get cooler in the evenings.

Tip #3: Learn Some Basic Portuguese

Cape Verde’s official language is Portuguese, and while English is widely spoken in tourist areas, it’s a good idea to learn some basic Portuguese phrases before you go. For starters, it shows a level of respect and interest in the culture and people of the country you’re visiting. Even just a few simple phrases like “hello,” “thank you,” and “excuse me” can go a long way in making a positive impression and building relationships with locals.

Additionally, learning a new language can make travel easier and more enjoyable, allowing you to communicate with others more effectively, navigate public transportation, and read signs and menus. It also enhances the overall cultural experience and can help you gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the local way of life. Not to mention, it’s just fun to learn something new.

Tip #4: Explore The Local Cuisine

Cape Verdean cuisine is a fusion of African, European, and Brazilian influences and is known for its fresh seafood, stews, and spicy eats. The sounds of these uniquely different cuisines being brought together on one dinner plate have our mouths watering.  While on your trip, sample the local cuisine, including the national dish, Cachupa, a hearty stew made with corn, beans, and meat or fish. Overall, the food on Cape Verde is both delicious and diverse, reflecting the country’s rich cultural heritage that we are excited for you to try.

Tip #5: Plan For Adventure

While we do encourage travelers to have plenty of time for rest and relaxation, we do recommend adding adventure to your itinerary while on your stay in Cape Verde. With so many things to do, you’ll have no shortage of fun on the islands, particularly Sal Island. Sal Island houses a plethora of activities.
